Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to check the score on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: The team travel to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their fourth-round League Cup match against the Magpies.
