Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to challenge certain rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the system already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
